What is Interact?

Interact is an international organization of service that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, and promotes international understanding and peace. Interact is a club for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with others in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world. The name “Interact” was created by combining the words “international” and “action.” Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs and Interact clubs organize at least two service projects a year: one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding. While Interact clubs receive guidance from individual Rotary Clubs, they govern and support themselves and are included in Rotary International’s “Youth Services” Avenue of Service.

Living by the motto “Service Above Self,“ Interactors embrace service and welcome it into their everyday lives. Through acts of service, Interact District 5170 empowers change and inspires those who don’t already have the love for service.

Interact goes beyond the boundaries that define a club– it’s a support system and source of inspiration for a diverse group of people worldwide. It serves as a flame, igniting the passion for service among teenagers as they grow alongside those that they are able to call their family.

Legacy “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” — Isaac Newton. District 5170 and the Interactors within it grow and learn from the past so that we can create a better future.
Interact has made me fearless. Knowing that every step I take, there is someone behind me who is ready to catch me if fall, our community embodies safety, breeds perseverance, and gives rise to the most selfless individuals our society has yet to witness. Through service, and through experience, I can say that interact has helped not just me, but countless others keep their heads toward the sky, when they would be otherwise facing the ground–keeping us focused on our dreams for ourselves, for each other, and society as a whole–one step at a time.

One of my best experiences in Interact was a service event led by one of the board members at my school and it was called Sacred Heart. It wasn’t one of those big and flashy events like walks or 5k runs, but it made a profound impact on my perspective on the world around me. We were just bagging oranges and other fruits, but seeing the smiles that lit up the faces of those who received the food that we bagged, was just… indescribable. I believe that that event really embodied the service aspect of Interact, that no matter how little, how small, what we do changes the lives of the less fortunate.

Interact showed me there is hope in this world. That no matter what you have been through, there is always hope. You fall once, you get up. You fall eight times, you get up that 8th time and keep your head up. No matter how many shatter pieces you have on the floor, pick those pieces up and put them back together by never ever giving up. You never know where life will take you, but at the end life will get better eventually

Interact doesn’t just offer you service hours, it offers you opportunities to step outside of your limits, opportunities to speak up and voice yourself; and most of all it gives you opportunities to realize that are capable. That you can break barriers, all the while giving you a support system, a family, a squad that will cheer you on, through thick and thin.

I continue Interact because when every single week is the same, every routine, action, assignment, conversation, Interact is one of the few ways any student can rise up and create change around themselves. It gives me a chance to see my own potential and the potential of those around me, and WOW, how much potential I see that we all have.

Interact has allowed me understand how important it is to give back to the world that has given so much to me.

One of the best experiences for me was flc. I met so many new people and it really taught me to go out of my comfort zone. It made me feel powerful, like I could actually do something to help the world.

Interact would not exist without the leadership of its members. Every time I work with other Interacters, we’re striving to find better ways to serve our communities and our world. We lead our peers by setting an example of what it means to serve and find ways to bring everyone else along with us in the fight for a better existence.
